Beyond the Veil: Everything We Know About 'The Testaments' on Hulu

The era of June Osborne may have drawn to a close, but the shadows of Gilead are far from fading. With the series finale of The Handmaid’s Tale still fresh in our minds, the focus now shifts to the highly anticipated sequel series: The Testaments.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 blockbuster novel, this expansion of the Gilead universe promises to answer the question fans have been asking for years: How does a regime this brutal finally begin to crumble?

Mark Your Calendars: The Premiere Date

The wait is almost over. Hulu has officially confirmed that The Testaments will premiere on April 8, 2026.

Launch Strategy: The series will kick off with a three-episode premiere on April 8.

Rollout: Following the premiere, new episodes will drop weekly.

The Timeline: A New Generation

Set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the sequel moves past the immediate struggle of the Handmaids and into the lives of those who have grown up within the system. We are moving away from the red capes and into the elite preparatory schools where the future "Wives" of Gilead are forged.

Meet the Cast: Familiar Faces & New Leads

The sequel features a powerhouse blend of returning legends and rising stars.

The Return of Aunt Lydia: Ann Dowd reprises her Emmy-winning role. However, this isn't the Lydia we know. In The Testaments, she moves from a frightening secondary authority figure to a central protagonist with her own hidden agenda.

The Three Leads: The story centers on the intertwined fates of Aunt Lydia and two young women: Agnes (played by Chase Infiniti from One Battle After Another) and Daisy (played by Lucy Halliday from Blue Jean).

The Elite Peers: Girl Meets World star Rowan Blanchard joins the cast as Shunammite, a pampered teen from a powerful Gilead family. Mattea Conforti plays Becka, a girl of humble origins navigating the high-pressure world of Gilead’s elite school.

What Is 'The Testaments' Actually About?

The series explores the internal rot of a totalitarian state through three distinct lenses:

Agnes (The Pious Daughter): A young woman raised in the "gilded halls" of Gilead who has never known another world.

Daisy (The Outsider): A new arrival and convert from beyond the borders, bringing a fresh and dangerous perspective to the regime.

Aunt Lydia (The Architect): We finally see behind the curtain. How does she maintain power? What private choices is she making to ensure her own survival—and perhaps the resistance?

"As they navigate Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school... their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future."

The Powerhouse Team Behind the Scenes

Fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the creative DNA remains intact. Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield return as executive producers, alongside Elisabeth Moss, who will also serve as an EP.

While the show focuses on a new generation, there is significant hope and rumor that Moss may reprise her role as June Osborne in some capacity, bridging the gap between the two eras. Mike Barker, a veteran of the original series, is set to direct the first three episodes.

Why This Sequel Matters

The Testaments isn't just more of the same. While the original series focused on large-scale rebellion and the horror of the Handmaids, the sequel is quieter, more psychological, and deeply personal. It asks uncomfortable questions about how belief is shaped and how those born into a broken system eventually learn to see the cracks.

Gilead was never going to disappear overnight. The Testaments is the story of the slow, inevitable realization that something is deeply wrong—and the courage it takes to act on it.

The countdown to April 8 has begun. Will you be returning to Gilead?
